BUSINESS MISSION

To print, design and manufacture awesome kids clothes.  They have to be comfy but funky!

WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

We are based just outside Preston in Lancashire.  Our office is a fantastic Old Pigsty on a farm in the middle of the Countryside.  I can hear horses neighing as I type!

WHERE ARE YOUR CLIENTS BASED?
All over the world!  We predominantly sell within the UK via our website, Facebook and Instagram but we regularly send to the USA, Australia and many Europe countries.

WHERE ARE YOU IN THE LIFECYCLE?
I would currently say we are in the ‘Growing’ phase.  No longer classed as a ‘startup’ we have 3 part time employees and we are growing month on month, year on year.

WHERE DO YOU PLAN TO BE IN 5 YEARS?
We will have a brand that is recognised, at least within our sector, on a National level.  We have several collaborations in the pipeline this year which will raise the awareness of Huxter and we are looking in to different areas of selling…. pop up shops, boutiques, franchising.  We intend to have our own Manufacturing plant within the UK, hopefully Lancashire. that will be able to not only manufacture Huxter clothes, but other labels as well.  Alongside that we would like printing facilities but that may take a year or two longer than 5 years….. let’s see!

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START?
I found it extremely hard being a Military Wife and moving house, in our case, every 9-12 months for 8 years!  I had two children during that time whom I absolutely adore but I felt I had nothing for ‘myself’.  I loved working before I got married and I didn’t realise how much I missed it.  My main motivation was the fact that I couldn’t find any clothes for my children that were bright and funky and having a background in textiles, I realised that there was actually something I could do about that.  I have maybe now also realised that my subconscious motivation was that I also wanted to be a working mum!

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME CHALLENGES SO FAR?
Everything has been a challenge but nothing has actually been hideous… does that mean I’m not a true Entrepreneur?!  My husband has recently got back from a 7 month tour overseas so it was a massive challenge to be living 4 hours away from any family and having 2 children to look after, a new business, moving offices and running Huxter, all with no immediate hands on help (twinned with having knee surgery at the same time!) I must say though, I grab the challenges and run with them, I often find, in adversity, I get my best work done.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST WINS AND SATISFYING HIGHS?
Moving in to our own offices, seeing the business grow, getting hugely positive feedback from our customers, employing people because we are growing, Huxter being recognised in the press and generally having people love what we do!

HOW DO YOU LET OFF STEAM AND RELAX?
We live near the sea so my favourite thing to do is explore the coast with my husband and two boys.  I am determined that one day my answer to that will be ‘going skiing’ or ‘diving in to the sea in the Maldives’ but, for the time being, I’m well and truly fixed to the Lancashire Coastline!

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST VALUABLE TOOLS TO HELP YOU COMMUNICATE WITH CUSTOMERS?
Instagram and Facebook.  I put Instagram first as my business is so visual however, I find Facebook is a huge driver for sales and interaction with my customers.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL MOTTO?
Never give up….

PICK ONE PERSON WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?
Antony Chesworth, founder of EKM.  A personal friend but also an extremely inspiring Entrepreneur, I learn something form him every time I see him.

PICK ONE PERSON WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM BUSINESS PARTNER?
I know it’s pretty stereotypical but, for me, it has to be Richard Branson.  I admire him greatly and have read his books and often read articles he writes.  However, what I like about him above all else is his demeanour.  I often find that it is instilled in us that if you want to get far in business you have to be hard nosed, cut throat, don’t take any prisoners and, maybe, that is true.  Richard may well be all of those in the Board Room but, to an outsider (and to several of my friends who have met him) he is an absolutely wonderful, gentle and kind human being.  For me, that is the most important thing, to be kind and generous whilst also being business like to build a company and brand that follows that ethos.  I have always worked hardest in my career for the people who speak to you nicely, don’t shout and don’t think they know everything (even if they do!)  I want to be that person too….

WHY IS BEING PART OF THE GODDESS FORMULA IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Building your own business can, at times, be an extremely lonely place to be.  Even if you are surrounded by people working for you, sometimes you just need to be able to lean on someone who isn’t involved directly with you or your business.  Having two children and building Huxter, I don’t always have time to go to networking meetings, it is so much easier being able to have direct access as and when I want it to a plethora of like minded women.
